Oil and additives

After much investigation, I have to conclude that additives are all destructive types of snake oil and will damage your engine either directly, or indirectly by interfering with and/or attacking the oil.
Additives also seem to damage the oil enough to bring about the onset of sludge.
Sludge is a little mystery in the car industry these days, although it is clearly prompted by small sump capacities, long change intervals, incorrect running in that gently fails to seal the bores and adding tins of snake oil.

Recipe for Sludge

Run in your car gently, do not change your (ideally non-synthetic) oil very often, use an oil additive. Then just wait until your engine dies, if you're lucky you can kill it within 20,000 miles.

Engine Oil Top Tips

  1. Avoid additives like you would Ebola
  2. Run in an engine (see below) with regular non-synthetic
  3. Once run in, use synthetic unless you leak/burn oil
  4. Ignore manufacturers intervals - check your oil first!
  5. Only thrash your car when it is fully warmed up
  6. Let your car idle for 30 minutes when cold - then drive it
  7. If you buy second hand - look under the filler cap at the valve gear, it must look clean and shiny. If it is too gunky - walk away.
