Cars

OK, we all love cars, but car lovers also love people, something much of the anti-car brigade forgets sometimes. Love them or hate them, they are useful and while we have oil, here to stay!

Hints and Tips

  1. For black plastic that has faded and/or gone grey, coat it with Johnson's Baby Oil to bring back the original shine d colour.
  2. For free UK traffic information, Look at The AA's site

Have you got a rare car?

The top ten rarest cars in the UK
  1. Morris Marina (1971-1980)
  2. Ford Cortina Mark IV/V (1976-1982)
  3. Renault 18 (1979-1986)
  4. Renault 5 (1972-1983)
  5. Skoda Estelle (1977-1992)
  6. Vauxhall Cavalier Mark III (1981-1989)
  7. Austin/Rover Metro (1980-1994)
  8. Austin/Rover Montego (1984-1995)
  9. Austin/Rover Maestro (1983-1995)
  10. Fiat Uno (1083-1989)

So much for Exotics, an '80s Porsche 911 is now cheaper than a posh Ford Fiesta and there are more of them still out and about on the road than the Vauxhall Cavalier!!

Running in

Most people think that running in an engine should be a gentle exercise that smooths down all the rough spots and beds everything in.
For 1950s bearing surfaces they are probably right, and high-revs for a cold engine are a definite no-no. In fact before you turn the key, the engine-build grease is all the cams will have to rely on until the cold, thick oil drips through and the main bearings etc should not be loaded until they are full of pressurised oil of a good shear strength.
